Pet Insurance

Pet Insurance

There’s always a few questions you need to answer to be a good pet owner. Whether you get a dog or cat you will need to decide where they sleep and how much they eat. A puppy or kitten will also need some training.

It’s also a good idea to get some pet insurance. Pets have a way of injuring themselves as they romp about. Having the right insurance can prolong their life and head off otherwise costly vet bills.

However, you need to know what to look for. Here’s a few tips for getting coverage for your furry friend.

Be Aware of The Limits

Getting good pet insurance is about reading between the lines and the fine print at the same time. For example, many policies have yearly limit. Once you go over it you’re not covered when Fido hurts a  leg playing in the woods behind your house. There can also be limits on certain types of injuries. There might be a cap on ligament tears or other common mishaps so you will need to ask the right questions and read the policy carefully. Why not check out one of our Toronto locations today? We have several offices in the GTA too with locations in Etobicoke and Mississauga.

Be Aware of the Exclusions

Some pet owners think their animal will be covered for all big and small injuries, but that’s not always the case. Along with the limits on your policy, you’ll need to find out what’s excluded completely. The policy you are looking at might not cover something you took for granted like dental cleanings.

Keep in mind that many policies on the market today won’t cover your pet for pre-existing conditions. This can be especially true if you have a purebred dog. Make sure the pet insurance company that you’re thinking about dealing with doesn’t exclude your animal based on genetic diseases.

Check The Deductibles

Like a lot of other insurance policies, the ones you cover your pet under will have deductibles. It’s important that you understand how much you need to pay before you sign on the dotted line for any one policy. Taking the time to understand the difference in these deductibles is important. It’s always a good idea to try to find a policy that has one annual payment. That way you can make several visits for an older dog and not have to pay out of pocket for expenses every time.
